Facebook Combats Hackers
An astounding 600,000 Facebook accounts have been trespassed by hackers using
usernames and passwords on the social networking site. This was revealed by
Facebook in their effort to run after the same fraudsters that are really quite
common at online casinos. It was Sophos, a company that works on computer
security, which has many clients in the online casino industry and is based in
the United Kingdom, that was able to detect these intrusions attempted on the
various Facebook member accounts. The news was revealed when Facebook tried to
promote its new security system, called “Trusted Friends,” an approach in
restoring the lost password for site users.
In the Facebook article, it contained within an infographic that describes how
the company was able to combat account hijacking, block spam and other problems
related to the program’s security. These problems crop up all the time with
online casinos because of the money changing hands, but it seems the lure of
Facebook is strong as well. Quantitatively, Facebook explained that their new
system recorded an impressive protection action by showing that of the 1 billion
who are logging into the site, only approximately 0.06 percent are compromised,
a better figure for social networking, though this would not fly at the online
casino gaming and gambling sites, Another tactic used by Facebook in combatting
the would-be hackers is for them to identify the pictures of the friends of the
users.
According to the Facebook spokesperson, Barry Schnitt, even if the hacker is
able to steal, phish or guess the login name and the password of a certain
account, common at online casinos, Facebook is still able to catch them 600,000
times daily. And this is something the company is proud of and rightly so. As
for Graham Cloley of Sophos, Facebook’s ID theft problem is a serious one since
it is a basis of the way other types of cyber misbehavior operates.
