Finding the Signs
Problem gambling is one of those topics within the online casino gambling
industry that has gone from hushed and taboo to right out in the open and fully
on the table for discussion. The gambling industry is very aware of the
challenges that problem gamblers present to the system and are frequently
looking for new methods to better protect these gamblers from harmful behaviors
and harmful internet gambling usage. The Responsible Gambling Council Research
center announced some very interesting, and slightly alarming results about a
gamblers ability to recognize problem gambling habits in themselves. Most
gamblers are now well aware of many of the behaviors that are associated with
problem gambling at the land and online casinos…but as much as they can see
these in others, the entire picture changes when they assess themselves.
This new problem gambling behavior research was conducted by Ipsos-Reid and
showed that only one in five land and online casino bettors were able reported
that they themselves engaged in risky gambling behavior. Compare this figure to
the whopping 92 percent of gamblers who could recognize a risky behavior in
another gambler. This clearly indicates that there is an alarming behavior
recognition gap that needs to be addressed when online casinos and betting
venues are monitoring player behavior and using software to allow players to
track their gambling habits.
The research also indicates that there is actually a lack of knowledge within
the actual online casino gambling and betting industry that needs to be
addressed. Punters as a whole were less knowledgeable about problem gambling
behaviors than the general public – clearly an issue! |
