Provincial Competition for Tribes
The Canadian online casino gambling industry is in a rapid state of flux these
days as the provincial governments begin to heavily discuss the licensing
options and feasibility. As provincial governments near the time when they will
pass through licensing regulations for foreign gaming sites the Mohawk nation is
taking a stand, affirming its place in the market and preparing for a lot of
competition. At this point the Kahnawake Gambling Commission handles the only
licensing of online casinos within Canada, that will change one Quebec,
Montreal, and other provinces join forces to create provincial licensing as a
way to bring in more revenues. Only in the past several months have the Canadian
provinces begun to discuss the revenue potential of licensed online gambling and
now the Mohawk nation has a whole new wave of concerns to consider this year.
Like the United States, tribal gambling is a key source of funding for the
tribes. The US has an extensive land gambling industry but US federal policies
have always prevented these tribes from branching into the international online
casino gambling industry. That is not the case for Canada though. Canada has a
veritable regulatory void when it comes to the online casinos which opened up
the perfect opportunity for the Mohawk nation to create an international funding
source by licensing, regulating, and hosting international gaming sites. For the
Mohawk nation, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and its revenue is the absolute
supreme source of funding for the tribe and provincial licensed online gambling
presents worrying competition.
The KGC has one main advantage over the provinces and that’s the fact that it’s
already well established in the online casino gambling market and licenses sites
for foreign use, not just domestic licensing – a key and valuable point. |
