Online Casino Limbo for Tribes in Canada
Kahnawake licensed online casinos are keeping a close eye on developments in
Canada as the Canadian government has seemingly wakened from a long slumber and
several politicians have made some bold statements about the legality of the
Mohawk Tribe’s gambling licensing operations. The Mohawk Nation has continually
asserted their autonomy from Canada and their right to operate business from
their land – including the online casino sites. The Kahnawake Gaming Commission
licenses and regulates fairly large number of internet gambling sites that
operate in the international arena and even host these gambling sites from
servers based on the tribal territory. The Canadian government has remained mum
on their position on this tribal licensing system for years now, but just this
week the Montreal Gazette reported that the Canadian government is stalling
foreign interests the Mohawk nation has recently focused on developing.
Specifically, the Mohawk nation runs the Mohawk Internet Technologies business
as well as the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. In recent months both the KGC and
MIT have begun to seek white listing by the UK so that KGC licensed online
casinos are not only given more legitimacy internationally, but so that KGC
licensed sites are able to legally advertise their gambling services in the UK.
Even more specifically, with UK white listing the KGC and MIT would have access
to more international online casino business because of their position as a UK
white listed licensing jurisdiction.
The Gazette though has reported that politicians in Canada have stalled the
progress of this white listing and are beginning to voice the opinion that the
Mohawk nations online casino gambling businesses are operating illegally. This
is, clearly, a controversial issue and one that the Canadian government has
stayed out of for ages. There is no indication if these recent political
statements act as an intent by politicians to clarify gambling regulations at
the national level. |
