Check in On Aussie Hypocrisy
The rest of the world continues to watch in contained horror as the Australian
government works full steam ahead on plans to censor the internet content
accessible within the country all in the name of safety from the online casino
gambling industry. Several key Aussie officials are leading the efforts to place
content filters at the Internet Service Provider level throughout all of
Australia. The United States has balked at the plan, Google voiced serious
concerns, and interest groups from around the globe are very concerned about the
censorship plan. The issue goes far beyond the online casinos and instead
threatens to compromise the freedom of knowledge that the internet provides
within the free world – which traditionally does include Australia by
definition.
And while there have been no new massive developments in Australia’s plan to
censor the online casinos and pornography out of the market, there has also been
no indication that Aussie Senator Nick Xenophon has any intention of slowing
down his actions to filter through ISPs. The biggest outrage really surfaced
earlier in the year when the censorship committee went far beyond just betting
online casino and pornography sites on the list and began to block images of
women with flat chests (like Kiera Knightly) because it simulates child
pornography.
The situation continues to develop rather slowly and the US and other countries
are watching Australia closely. Although the desire to block online casinos from
the market is quite valid, the method of censoring content is a recipe for
disaster and just puts far too much power in the hands of the government. |
