Online Casinos Only Exclude US
The Economic Times in London recently took a pretty close
look at the online casinos and betting shops in the UK and even more
specifically looked at these companies in relation to their foreign gambling
policies. The results may actually be a bit surprising even for the most avid
consumer of industry news. The online casino and betting sites accept gamblers
from all over the world with the US as the only main exception for the vast
majority of the sites. What’s so interesting is the fact that internet gambling
is certainly illegal in other countries, but only the US has created such a fuss
about the situation that the gambling sites respect the local laws and fully
geo-block an entire nation.
The Times piece was specifically investigating the current online casino betting
that is taking place at UK internet betting sites from India. The Indian Premier
League’s major cricket match, the Twenty20 series has just kicked off and the
UK’s most prominent betting companies, Ladbrokes and Will Hill, both expect to
take in as much as GBP 4 million during the tournament game. Interesting to
note, though, is the fact that online casinos are illegal in India just as much
as they are illegal in the US and yet these UK licensed gambling sites are not
blocking Indian gamblers – the answer lies almost wholly in the enforcement.
India does not enforce the anti-internet gambling laws whereas the US is very
prominent in its legal action against sites operating for US gamblers.
Additionally, a spokesperson for Will Hill noted that although the GBP 4 million
in revenue off of the IPL tournament, non-UK betting only accounts for a mere 20
percent of the online casino gambling group’s profits and revenue. That means
that although Will Hill accepts bets and business from all over the world, 80
percent of the money coming into the gambling group is actually based right near
home. |
