Germany Encouraged to Change
The German online casino gambling and betting markets is one of the handful of
European markets that solidly remains protected and operating a monopoly despite
requests and pressure from the European Commission for more fair and open
policies. The 2006 German Interstate Gambling Treaty made headlines when the
government began enforcing the blocks and bans last year. All of the German
states previously agreed to stand behind the Interstate treaty, but now are
balking because of the revenue potential and safety of a larger and competitive
gambling market that welcomes competition from offshore companies. In the past
few months several German states have expressed a keen interest in new gambling
regulations, this request is now backed up by the request sent by the Olympic
Sports Federation and Bundesliga.
The German government has no choice now but to consider these new requests for
an open and legalized online casino and betting industry. There are certainly no
guarantees for immediate change to the German regulations, but the gamblers and
the gambling industry are hopeful that positive changes will come from the
powerful request of the major football leagues and teams. The fact is, Germany’s
online casino betting market is very poor because of the monopoly – the betting
odds are non-competitive and the small pool of gamblers makes wagering on major
sports events and games a lot less exciting than it could be with proper
competition.
The other major point acting in favour of the request for a regulated online
casino betting market is the fact a more diverse and regulated market will make
the market a safer place and lower the likelihood of corruption within the
sports industry, a fact that can not be emphasized enough nor overlooked. |
