Debating US Online Casinos
The United States online casino gambling market is becoming one of those
seemingly never ending topics of interest to foreign and domestic markets – the
industry loves to speculate on the US’ plans for upcoming markets as well as the
likelihood that the US will institute the full licensing and regulation regime
that is so hotly being pushed by US Democrats. The implementation deadline for
the highly controversial UIGEA enforcement regulation is looming on the horizon
and the online casinos and internet poker sites are really running out of time
to save their industry from huge legal action and repercussions. Also, the banks
in the US are fearful of the impact that implementing the new regulations will
have on their finances and processing power – there is just no way to
effectively block the industry according to one side of the debate.
The other side of the debate though emphasizes that online casinos are a
dangerous pastime and the internet gambling industry will only bring financial
ruin and social ills to the US market if it is legalized. The anti-online casino
movement is led by Alabama Republican Representative Spencer Bachus. Bachus is
responsible for pushing through the UIGEA even though the wording the bill was
half-backed, ambiguous and far from complete. Now though, as Bachus’ pet project
is nearing implementation he is very vocal – dare we say rabid? – in his support
for the UIGEA enforcement regulations.
Bachus represents a pretty radically conservative viewpoint though and it’s just
a shame that the online casinos have had such a tough time finding a more fair
and balanced perspective in the media. At this point, Democratic Representative
Barney Frank is doing all he can to find the uphill battle of properly educating
politicians on the aspects of the internet gambling industry since they are
constantly hearing Bachus fairly ridiculous assertions about the dangers of
internet gambling specifically. |
