Poker Fights Classifying Online Casinos

One of the surest ways to pick a fight with a land and online casino poker gambling enthusiast is to bring up the longstanding skill versus chance debate that is not only alive and well on the player level, but an issue that also often makes it way through the international court systems as well. The game of poker seems to continually face those critics who negate that strong role that skill plays in the game and instead strongly assert that playing a hand of poker is just like playing at the online casinos – a fully chance based game. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court will now have its chance to weigh in on the issue as two very adamant Pennsylvania residents have taken their case through all of the state’s lower courts and are now asking the state Supreme Court to give a verdict.

The two poker playing enthusiasts, Diane Alice Dent and Walter Leroy Watkins were arrested nearly two years ago now for arranging a game of poker in their garage for various friends. The no-rake game was meant as a friendly way for friends to enjoy a good game of regular poker – and we’re talking land poker, not even the online casinos (which would have no doubt gotten the couple pair arrested). Their poker games were raided by the police that year and have faced several various court hearings and rulings. The lower courts sided with the poker organizers that the game of poker is skill based.

The case escalated though when the state Superior Court reversed the lower court ruling in favour of ruling poker as a game of chance akin to the online casinos and therefore regulated under state gambling laws. The Poker Players Alliance is helping the pair fight the case in the courts because the PPA feels that if the Supreme Court reviews all of the newest research related to game of poker it will likely agree that the game has just an element of chance, but is primarily influenced by player skill.
