Calling for Controls
Two prominent researchers within the Australian land and online casino gambling
market have released new opinions this week that indicate that they feel the
Australian government needs stronger national controls on the gambling industry.
Linda Hancock and Michael O’Neil are two academics who have examined the
Australian gambling industry and concluded that the Aussie states are too
reliant on gambling revenues and because of this reliance are not properly
caring for the potential problem and underage gamblers in the market. Although
the online casinos are mostly blocked in the market already, land gambling is a
huge industry that is completely regulated by state governments within
Australia, a fact that both academics have been incredibly critical about.
Both academics filed the report with the national government with their opinions
and support for a nationally regulated and controlled gambling industry very
clear. Additionally, they very clearly did not mention the current debates over
an Australian online casino gambling industry but seem to back up Senator Nick
Xenophon and others in a general disdain and lack of support for legalized
internet gambling. The biggest action that the report calls for are more federal
government level policies that will force the casinos and betting venues to
better assist and identify problem gambling in the market, rather than let it
run rampant.
This report is just one of the latest criticisms to factor into the huge debate
that is now waging in Australia as free-rights advocates fight possible internet
censorship policies that would block out the online casinos while a handful of
Aussie politicians campaign hard to pass through regulations that would severely
censor the internet and limit personal freedoms. |
