China's Anti-Online Casino Agenda

The Chinese government has made no secret over the past year about its plan to go to any extremes necessary to fully block the online casinos from accessing Chinese players in the future. The anti internet gambling agenda has been on the docket for quite some time, and the international outcry is less about the fact that China plans to block the online casino sites, but more so the methods they plan to employ that has everyone up and arms over censorship and internet freedom. The issue cropping up with the Chinese policies is the fact that China has no restrictions on how far the government can take the situation – as far as they deem necessary to control the problem. The people of China have no say in how this internet censorship is going to shake down and no way to effectively fight against the government’s current plan.

What was once just positioned as a filter that would really mainly block out the online casinos is now being called a necessary step for the Chinese government to block out all hostile foreign internet influences that are entering the country via the internet. That is a pretty fancy way of saying that any and all content that the government deems inappropriate will be completely censored out of the Chinese internet. Included in this list already are news information portals from abroad – particularly the US and Europe. The Chinese government prefers to control all of the news information that the public is able to access and consume and anything anti-China will certainly be nixed by the content filters.

The decision to block online casinos has been a long time coming but China is taking the planned censorship way to far by blocking all controversial content at the ISP level. Because of the planned censorship of the internet, internet freedom advocates and search giant Google has backed out of the industry, along with protests from other companies and organizations all over the free world.
