Are they Sweepstakes or Online Casinos
The State of Florida has a new battle on its hands this week as the internet
cafes face off against the Florida race tracks in a battle that will have far
reaching implications throughout the state. The sweepstakes industry in the
state of Florida is incredibly popular right now and it has some pretty broad
regulations in the state that many other states have never really allowed. And
because of these more liberal and full sweepstakes policies, the internet cafes
are now riding a fine line of legality by offering internet café visitors the
opportunity to buy internet time in trade for entry into various sweepstakes – a
practice that the Florida tracks claim is really a front for forms of illegal
internet gambling.
Traditionally the tattling of one industry on another is not hugely popular –
after all, their in similar businesses but not, arguably, targeting the same
market. The race tracks though are sinking in the states and horse and dog
tracks all over the United States have had an amazingly hard time finding the
funds to stay afloat – for that reason they are willing to stop any and all
businesses that many be taking needed funds out of the tracks, particularly if
that’s the online casino gambling industry.
The Florida courts will be left to decide if these internet cafes are riding on
the right side of the thin line, and if their found to actually be operating as
online casinos they could face large fines and be forced to close down all
operations. The internet cafes are not going to take the allegations sitting
down though, they defend that theirs is a basic business that offers customers
the chance to buy certain goods from the café and then receive certain rewards
and benefits along the way. |
