Sitting Sidelines for Online Casinos
The World Trade Organization has already waded into the international online
casino gambling debate once in regards to the United States’ decision to create
and international ban of offshore gambling companies. The WTO really stepped up
to the plate for the US situation and has made strides in forcing the US into
discussions with both Antigua and the EU concerning the foreign ban on online
casinos. In more disappointing news though, the WTO has specifically chosen to
not involve itself in the China internet gambling situation. China is going a
similar route as the US but through content censorship at times as well as heavy
police action to stop the illegal gambling from occurring. The WTO has not yet
challenged China…and really has no plans to do so according to speculation.
One of the chief reasons that the WTO officials have not yet fully tackled the
online casino gambling issue is out of a fear and assumption that they cannot
win the battle. And the fact is, there is truth in that fear. The US has refused
to really comply and there is little doubt that China would be any more willing
to open its doors to foreign online casinos. If the WTO were to really and truly
take on these two major powers and then lose the battle, it would seriously
jeopardize the authority and power of this major trade organization.
The Chinese government has actually come forth and point-blank noted that the
government has no plans to cede its right to censor internet content to the WTO.
So, in this regard, the foreign online casinos affected by these two bans are a
bit in the lurch since there is no formal international action in the works to
alter their policies and position on internet gambling. |
