Canadian Gambling Relationships
The Canadian online casino gambling industry is one of the hottest topics right
now as several key provinces in the country announced new regulations and
changes that will allow the individual provincial governments to legalize and
then tax the gambling sites offering services to players in the market.
Interestingly enough, the online casinos are not even a bit new to Canada, but
the pending regulations are new. Canadians have long gambled through the
internet because the Canadian government simply refuses to come down with a firm
and updated decision on the legality of the industry in Canada. Instead, the
Kahnawake Gaming Commission has simply operated according to its own tribal laws
– and that has long included the licensing of gambling sites that operate on an
international level…including for Canadian gamblers.
The relationship between the Canadian government and the Mohawk tribe is
strained at the worst of times and simply complacent at the best. Throughout
North America the tribes and tribal lands assert their independence from the
larger governments (Canada and the US) in regards to gaming laws in particular.
The Mohawk Tribe formed the Kahnawake Gaming Commission as a way to license
online casinos for the international market and also allow these sites server
space on the tribal land. The tribe has long asserted its sovereignty from
Canada and therefore did not ask permission to operate the licensing
jurisdiction off of their lands.
Now though, as the online casinos become an international issue and are quite
prominent, the Canadian provinces are looking for a way to better control their
provincial markets, and this includes by taking a closer look at the licensing
that is going on through the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. As licensing of sites
for provinces is more prominent it will be tricky for the provincial governments
to avoid issues with the tribal policies and practices. |
