Online Casinos and Bill Progressing
Barney Frank’s bill may actually be coming into fruition in the very near future
as rumors are circulating Congress that his landmark bill is actually going to
make it to the floor of Congress for markup. Frank’s bill, the Internet Gambling
Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act (HR2267), would actually
repeal the controversial UIGEA that blocks offshore online casinos from
operating in the US market. Frank has long been a proponent of a legalized and
regulated online casino gambling market that properly protects player interests
while also allowing the government to pull taxes from the industry. Frank’s bill
has been in development for three years now, and with a solid 66 bi-[partisan
co-sponsors on the bill there is a hope and a rumor that it will actually make
it to the floor of Congress.
Frank is Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and therefore has a
bit of sway in the process – but even with his influence, the ongoing healthcare
reform debates have completely dominated all discussions for months and pushed
the online casino gambling debate aside. With the healthcare debate winding
down, the online casinos have an opportunity to take a more prominent point of
discussion. John Pappas, the Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance
(PPA) voiced his opinion that the bill is likely going for markup this spring.
The PPA is incredibly active in the US online casino gambling situation and
although the PPA is specifically pushing poker, Frank’s bill would also legalize
the poker industry throughout the US and legitimize all of the PPA’s efforts
over the past three years. |
