Changes Cause Polish Concerns
The Polish government has put into effect new regulations that legislate just
how the football and sporting teams can enter into sponsorship deals with the
online casinos and sports betting sites. Elsewhere in Europe, sponsorship deals
are an incredibly integral way that the leagues are able to pay for jerseys and
generally stay afloat; the deals are often incredibly advantageous for both the
football teams as well as the online casino sports betting companies. But with
the regulations that came into effect in January of this year, the laws are
virtually stopping all of the ability for football teams to find lucrative
sponsorship deals within the internet gambling industry.
The news laws are putting a very abrupt end to some of the existing sponsorship
deals that were already in place as the online casinos and football clubs
attempt to immediately comply with the new policies or face enforcement action
from the Polish officials. Basically, the online casinos operating in Poland
have been doing so under the EU guidelines of free trade, but not with the
express permission of the government to operate internet gambling in the market.
Unibet, a Swedish betting company, actually had a sponsorship deal in place with
the Polish Football Federation – that contract has been terminated though.
The Polish government is specifically acting against the online casino gambling
industry and mandating that all gambling occurring in the country happen through
the land based venues. This policy will not fly if Poland hopes to align with EU
trade policies in the future, but for now there is little that the industry can
do to put a stop to it. |
