Why is the NFL so Anti Gambling?
As the efforts to legalize online casinos in the Untied States gain momentum
there is so a continued presence of counter efforts and lobbying money mixed
into the situation as several interest groups are pushing hard for the current
legislation (the controversial UIGEA) to remain in effect. Most notable as one
of the more surprising groups opposing the online casino legalization efforts is
the National Football League. Actually, it might not be entirely surprising that
the NFL is spending millions in lobbying dollars to keep internet gambling
banned in the US market. The NFL continues to claim that the legalizing the
online casinos in the US would lead to corruption within the sports industry as
a result of such things as match fixing and other issues.
The big sticking point though in this issue is the fact that sports betting on
NFL games is legal in Nevada – it’s the only state in the US that can legally
offer wagering on the sporting teams and the NFL claims that any widespread
online casino sports betting would automatically lead to corruption. But where
are the facts that back up these claims? Sports betting is a truly enormous
international industry and the online casinos and sports betting sites have been
more than adequately regulated in the EU, the UK, and Australia without any wide
reaching problems that can be attributed to the industry.
Really, the NFL is protecting its own interests and it all comes down to money.
A wider US online casino sports betting industry is inevitable and the efforts
to block it from implementation are really just delaying what is going to be
inevitable changes. Regulating the industry will not fundamentally change the
nature of the game and the fans as the NFL claims is a key fear, it would just
give US gamblers a safe venue to practice the sports betting and wagering that
is already taking place on the US internet gambling black market. |
