Negative Media Just as Good
Tombola Bingo is an online casino bingo gambling site in the UK that has
recently invested millions in building a new advertising campaign. Unfortunately
for the company, the new campaign didn’t take long to go bust, and the
Advertising Standards Authority officially banned the latest ad from Tombola
because it undermined the standing of black character and was potentially
stigmatizing and humiliating. The ad really blew up the online casino industry
media over the past week as the ASA reviewed the commercial and handed down its
verdict – and has really put the Tombola name right into the spotlight.
This is one of those situations where the gambling group is thinking “any
exposure is good exposure.” The online casinos and bingo sites in the UK are
incredibly competitive and advertising for gambling is limited in scope and
breadth. There is also the potential to advertise in print media, but really,
the online casino sites have a lot more hoops to jump through if they want a
national ad campaign to succeed. Tombala has now lost its national campaign, but
there is a strong chance that the company doesn’t even really care because
Tombala’s name has just blown up recently.
All of the standard industry media covered Tombola’s referral to the ASA and the
subsequent banning of the ad campaign – and that is just good business. Although
the company was in the wrong, the error was not so egregious that it overshadows
the good old media attention. Individuals who would have never encountered
Tombola’s ad campaign have now heard about the online caisno bingo company, and
that’s going to do wonders for the company’s business. |
