Motivated by Money
Several Canadian provinces are quickly moving toward the legalized online casino
gambling industry despite rhetoric over the past several years that often
vilified the gambling industry and made it seem as though internet gambling
would never be accepted by the governments. Governments all over the world are
singing a different tune these days in the wake of the global financial
recession – state coffers are empty and a more robust gambling industry is fast
becoming an international solution to budget deficits. British Columbia has
actually done a complete turnaround on the gambling industry – both land and
online casino; the government plans to allow a Las Vegas company to open a land
gambling venue in Vancouver while similarly licensing and expanding the amount
of legal internet gambling.
Several years ago key members of the British Columbian government were vocal in
their distaste for the online casino gambling industry and those politicians
made very precise statements that indicated that they had no plans to allow
legalized internet gambling into the province. Fast forward though, and the
government has slowly allowed forms of internet gambling to creep in through the
B.C. Lottery Corporation. Keno and Poker through the B.C. Lottery Corporation’s
site has already been allowed, and not full fledged online casinos are in the
process of legalization.
All of these expansions can be chalked up to one purpose – money. The British
Columbian budget is dry and the online casinos and gambling expansions will add
huge sums annually to the state coffers through taxation. More gambling is on
the way in the region and unlike in years past, this time the internet wagering
is going to be legal and likely more widespread than in any other province in
Canada – at least until those provinces also legalize the industry! |
