Majority Leaning Toward Government
A new research study conducted throughout North America indicates that both
Canadians and Americans are of the majority opinion that the federal government
should regulate and legalize online casinos throughout the country. The research
survey was conducted by Ipsos Reid and attempted to match those Canadians and
Americans surveyed to the actual percentage demographics within each respective
country. And though there is a margin of error for all of the results in the
survey, the results showed some startling trends in the North American gaming
industry – trends that other online casino studies have also hinted at but never
provided strong evidence of support.
Namely, the number of Canadians and Americans that know that online casino
gambling is illegal in their country has dropped over the past three years,
since the time Ipsos Reid conducted the last study. Within the US results, the
2007 to 2010 results lowered by hour percentage points (41 to 37) while the
Canadian results showed a very similar trend of a 5 percent drop (28 to 23). In
further questions on the survey, the majority of respondents indicated that they
felt the online casinos should be regulated in their respective market.
There were differences however on those that felt the individual states and
provinces should have control over the regulations versus those respondents
looking for the governments to take the initiative to fully regulate and license
gambling sites. The main differences between the two demographics comes to light
when analyzing the number of American gamblers who want regulations – Americans
by and large are seeking a government program in place to safeguard the
industry, while more Canadians are willing to keep the status quo and gamble
without government regulations on the industry. |
