Oh, Kentucky
Kentucky just doesn’t like to be out of the headlines very much apparently. The
state has been front and center in the online casino gambling industry media for
well over a year and a half now, and yet the government is not making any
efforts to fully sort out the situation and make better regulations and laws.
Well, at least that was the case. Now though, the state that has really made
headlines for anti-online casino gambling efforts has decided to reap a few
profits from the ever-present internet gambling industry through new tax laws
that will legally allow certain internet based betting sites to take the bets of
Kentucky gamblers and then hand some of that money over to the state.
The domain name seizure attempts of the past more than a year made headlines
because of the ridiculous nature of the claims. Now fast forward to the vote
this past Friday through the State House and the state government announced that
a new bill that will tax all online gambling in the state is quite closing to
passing through into law. This is a hypocritical move by the Kentucky officials
and has not gone unnoticed by the online casinos. This new carve-out is not only
bold and hypocritical for the state of Kentucky, but it also highlights a key
problem that the international gambling industry has with the US in general.
Really, it’s just perfectly in line with what the world has come to expect from
Kentucky in general. Although the online casinos will be blocked as a part of
the regulations because of federal mandates, internet betting at companies like
Churchill Downs will be legalized and sanctioned by the state if the new law
passes. |
