Florida's Intrastate Gambling
Florida is on the fast track toward the legalization of internet poker in the
state under the same sort of regulations that states like New Jersey, Iowa, and
others are pursuing as well. Online casinos are illegal in the US across state
lines and via offshore companies, but the UIGEA does not have the right to fully
block intrastate gambling, and that’s where the a Florida lawmaker,
Representative Joseph Abruzzo, plans use Florida law to circumvent the UIGEA and
begin offering legalized internet poker gambling in the state with tax revenues
benefiting the state coffers. The bill has been thoroughly developed to adhere
to the federal laws that are blocking offshore online casinos and instead
connecting only Florida state gamblers in an internet poker gaming situation
from all across the state.
This new bill has already been introduced now into the Florida legislator and
attempts to regulate the proposed online poker industry through the Division of
Pari-mutuel Wagering. The proposed bill is intended to not only regulate an
activity that is already happening all across the state, but to also protect
Florida gamblers from the possibly unscrupulous offshore and foreign online
casino and poker gambling companies targeting US residents, including Florida
residents. The bill would allow the state to charge a licensing fee to the
companies looking to offer internet gambling. The state’s fee is a flat 20
percent off of the top, and then operators and affiliates are able to take
profit and expenses out of the remaining.
Abruzzo authored the online poker bill in question and a has provided to all of
the necessary areas of legalizing forms of gambling in the state – from
licensing fees to new regulations needed to protect problem and underage
gamblers, Abruzzo’s bill is ready for passage and could mean a legal intrastate
gambling monopoly by the end of the year if passed. |
