Fine Lines of the Laws
There are some very fine lines between the laws that separate the land and
online casino gambling industry and similarly the companies that try to tread
this line. In Florida, the same internet gambling laws prohibit the online
casinos from operating throughout the state, but yet Florida has some very
healthy and robust laws related to the sweepstakes and running of competitions
where citizens can win different prizes. The Allied Veterans of the World Inc. &
Affiliates just announced a lawsuit against the a Florida city because of the
fine lines that separate running sweepstakes through the internet and being
banned as a type of illegal online casino gambling. The Allied Veterans were
operating out of a internet café in Longwood last year when a gaming raid in the
city confiscated a lot of the companies equipment under the allegations of
operating illegally.
Interestingly enough, the Allied Veterans operates within other Florida cities
without issue and yet the Longwood police department has not only seized and
refused to return a lot the seized goods, but the police have threatened the
internet café that was allowing the Allied Veterans to operate. The online
casinos are still illegal in the state, and so it is important for local
authorities to watch out at the internet cafes to ensure that they are not
facilitating the online casinos. At the same time, other cities believe that the
Allied Veterans’ sweepstakes action is well within the confines of Florida law
and have not made any attempts to shut down the activity.
The Allied Veterans recently launched their lawsuit against the city of Longwood
and are looking for monetary restitution from the city for lost gaming revenues
that the company has not had since it was forcibly shut down and forbidden from
operating out of Longwood. Even the courts seem to side with the Allied Veterans
in claims that the city’s raid was excessive and continued action has been
unnecessary. |
