Gamblers Confused
New research in the United States shows that the conservative right in the
United States has once again done a fantastic job confusing mass America with
misinformation. The online casino gambling industry has been a controversial
hotspot in politics and the media for quite some time now, and it seems that the
media and the politicians are just not doing a great job communicating the
debate specifics. Essentially, the offshore online casinos are banned from
operating in the US market at the federal level. But! And that’s a really bit
but, it is not, and has never been, illegal at a federal level for US citizens
to gamble via the internet.
There is only one US state that has made online casinos and internet poker
gambling illegal, and that’s the great state of Washington. A research poll
conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University indicates that more than two thirds
of those Americans polled believe that it is already illegal to gamble through
the internet in the US. That’s actually not even remotely true, but yet it’s the
indicated response. Two thirds of those polled replied that they believe that
the US laws should not be altered to allow internet gambling –implying they
think that the pastime is illegal already.
This misinformation is pretty much a direct result of the type of information
reported in the US national media – particularly in the more right-wing media
agendas. Respondents indicated that they did not have specific information about
the online casino gambling industry, but rather vague conclusions that the
internet gambling industry is more dangerous/has worse effects on gamblers –
information that numerous research studies have proven false. |
