ASA Strikes Again
The United Kingdom has some of the most liberalized and open gambling laws in
the world. The country passed the 2005 Gambling Act and then allowed these
regulations to come into full effect in 2008. The new laws and regulations
created and environment in the UK that is very open to many forms of land and
internet gambling, but there are organizations firmly in place that monitor the
situation and keep all of the online casinos and gambling groups operating
strictly according to law. The Advertising Standards Authority in the UK takes
its job pretty seriously, and the government sanctioned organization has once
again brought the clever down on an advertising campaign in the country that
actually blurred ethical lines rather than the laws related to gambling.
Tombola bingo launched its new advertising campaign just recently and aimed the
ads at prime time television – a pricey spot to be sure, and also a spot that
ensured that millions of Brits caught the ad as it aired. It didn’t take long
for the complaints to start pouring in to the ASA because the online casino
bingo company’s advertisement for the bingo site was actually promoting outdated
and false sterotypes that have long been banned in the UK – and much of the
Western world for that matter.
The controversial campaign showed a well dressed white man and a casually
dressed black man sitting on the beach with a ukulele – the catch is the fact
that the black man was singing everything the white man said. Complaints
indicated that the ad enforced racial stereotypes of white dominance over black
people – a sentiment that is a very sore subject to this day. |
