Not a Strong Point
Lawyers for the State of Washington in haven’t really presented the strongest
case this year as the Poker Players Alliance Washington State Director Lee
Rousso pushes for the government to overturn the legislation that makes online
casinos and internet poker illegal and a felony offense within the state.
Washington is the only US state that has such harsh penalties and a key
justification for banning the online casino and poker sites comes down to a
claim that internet gambling cannot be sufficiently controlled via regulations –
a claim that is uncategorically untrue and has been disproved by numerous
governments all over the world that are currently successfully regulating
gambling sites.
The fact of the matter is simple, Washington legislators have banned the online
casinos because they compete with the revenue that the Washington land gambling
industry is bringing in and the protectionist legislation is meant to funnel all
of the state’s poker, gambling, and betting activity through the heavily taxed
Washington and tribal gambling venues. Additionally, the fact that horserace
betting is allowed in the state just goes to show that there is a definite
prejudice just against the online casino industry in particular. Thomas
Goldstein noted that there is no real and actual evidence that the state can use
to fully claim that regulated and safe gambling is impossible.
The Washington case is now going to head to the state Supreme Court in the
coming months and the PPA will have the chance to submit more evidence and
opinions about why the internet poker industry in particular, beyond just the
online casinos, should be legalized within the state. |
