Online Casinos Reminiscent of Prohibition
You would think that the United States would have learned an important lesson
from the alcohol prohibition of the early 1900’s. The US government felt that
alcohol was a bane on society and blocked alcohol sales and consumption
throughout the US. History has now shown that what seemed like a successful idea
at the time turned out as a major fail – online casinos though are thought to be
in the same position. Although the US government thought it could completely
control the distribution and access of alcohol in the country it was a major
fail and regulation of the market has turned out so much more successful in the
long run. Politicians supporting new online casino gambling regulations in
Congress feel that the UIGEA is a similar situation akin to Prohibition in the
20s.
Like Prohibition, the government attempted to ban an activity that was simply
already too ingrained in the culture to eradicate. Instead, the US government
spent huge quantities of money enforcing the Prohibition and lost years of
revenue from taxing the industry. The same can be said about the online casinos
right now. The UIGEA bans offshore gambling sites but these offshore companies
are still readily accessing US internet gamblers, just as alcohol was widely
available in underground markets to US citizens. The online casino gambling
proponents strongly feel that the US will best benefit from full and proper
regulation of the industry in the US.
The fact is, many politicians have agreed that the UIGEA is nearly unenforceable
on a full and long-term scale – there is always going to be illegal online
casino gambling activity slipping through the legislative cracks. Actual
regulation and safeguards built into the industry is not even remotely as
difficult as attempting to block and ban online gambling sites. |
