Prison for Online Casino Hacker
The UK public and the online casino gambling industry are breathing a collective
sigh of relief this week as the UK government finally sentenced a UK young adult
to prison for his hacking crimes and for identity theft. Alistair Peckover, 21,
was given a second change last year when the courts ruled that the fraudster
could take probation rather than a prison sentence for his actions that
defrauded the online casinos and betting sites in the UK while using false
identities. Peckover was actively hacking the internet through email accounts
and gambling sites for two years before the authorities managed to track him
down and the courts warned Peckover to stop the hacking and fraud in exchange
for a lighter suspended sentence. The loner hacker though was unable to keep
from defrauding UK citizens through the internet and is now facing two years in
prison.
Peckover’s crimes are pretty severe considering his actions and hacks were
specifically acting against unsuspecting citizens all over the world. Although
some of Peckover’s targets were within the UK, Peckover used identities stolen
from email accounts to create dozens and dozens of accounts at online casinos
and betting sites so that he could gamble and spend other people’s money to
purchase sports cars, jewelry and other material possessions through his
identity fraud. The wide-scale fraud was used to hack more than 500 emails and
Peckover went so far as to even steal the identities of three other individuals
to the point that he even had multiple passports.
The online casinos have had no form of recourse in this situation since Peckover
was able to thoroughly steal multiple elements of their identities, thus passing
through the identity checks in place. Although Peckover was given a second
chance from the courts just two months after his court warning he was once again
caught performing online and gambling fraud. |
