What Was the Point?
The Productivity Commission in Australia was commissioned by the government to
study impact that land and online casino gambling has had on the country and
also investigate the current regulations and how they are working with an eye
toward either more stringent legislation or the other side, licensing. Licensing
the online casinos is a major push not only from the global gambling industry,
but apparently the Productivity Commission agrees that the Aussie government
could be best served by embracing the gambling industry and looking for ways to
actively control rather than controversial banning methods.
Although the Productivity Commission certainly did not have only rosy comments
to say out the online casinos and the impact that internet gambling would have
on Australia, the Commission’s official report indicated that the Commission
feels that Australia would be best served by regulating and licensing the
industry. The Aussie government though has taken the Commission’s report and
seemingly not even considered those recommendations. Instead, the Aussie
government is moving full steam ahead on plans to block and ban online casino
sites through ISP level content censorship as well as filtering.
This is an incredibly controversial move on the side of the Aussie government
because the government’s plans have not even adjusted or altered as a result of
the Commissions report and recommendations. Online casinos are still on the ban
list and Aussie officials plan an era of prohibition that will likely, as the
Commission has predicted, not work and then force the government to adjust
regulations later. |
