Partially Legitimate Concerns
New Jersey’s land gambling industry, the casinos that make up Atlantic City,
have just announced a full scale objection to the proposed state gambling
regulations that would have legalized an intrastate online gambling industry.
What’s interesting is that both sides have very legitimate concerns about
offering online casino sites into the New Jersey market. On the one side, the
state government is looking for a way to increase the amount of revenue flowing
into the state from the gambling industry and the internet gambling sites make a
sensible option since so many US states are currently considering intrastate
online gambling.
Then on the other hand, the land based casinos out of Atlantic City are
legitimately concerned that by allowing online casinos into the market the state
will begin to make Atlantic City obsolete. Part of New Jersey’s working
structure is the fact that Atlantic City is a destination resort area within the
state. The land gambling companies worry that internet gambling sites run by
offshore online casino companies will allow gambling all over the state and thus
negate the flow of residents into Atlantic City for gambling weekends and
events.
To counter those claims though, the New Jersey government highlights the fact
that land gambling venues in the state are the funnels of all of the potential
online casino gambling revenue for New Jersey. Although other companies may back
the gambling sites, the land venues in Atlantic City will hold the ropes and
gain a lot of potential revenue through this proposed internet gambling
structure. |
