Who Opposes the UIGEA?
The UIGEA is one of the more controversial pieces of legislation in the United
States right now that has nothing to do with the current Obama administration.
The internet gambling issue has been incredibly prominent over the past three
years and there have been numerous solutions offered up by both sides of the
debate, the Democrats and the Republicans, and yet nothing has fully happened to
straighten out the US online casino gambling situation. One of the obstacles
facing the pro-regulation advocates is the fact that support for the new
legislation waffles in their support. Kentucky, New Jersey, and others have both
supported and not supported the efforts to legalize online casinos depending on
the topic of debate.
To be fair to Congressional Representative Barney Frank, he has done incredibly
well in building up a solid base of co-signers for the online casino bill who
have stuck with the efforts from the moment they co-signed. The real issues
though lie in the fact that the individual US states are not standing together
on which legislation to support. The UIGEA is bad for the nation, it
ineffectively blocks offshore online casinos and creates an underground market
that is hard for individual states to even block. But the counter to the UIGEA
is full licensing and regulation at the federal level – also a step the US
states are balking at.
Advancements and progress within the online casino gambling situation has slowed
down a lot as the two sides battle within Congress for the most support.
Kentucky is backing blocks on the gambling industry to protect state lotteries
and New Jersey has taken a similar position as a way to maintain state rights to
self-govern. |
