Casinos Oppose Online Efforts
The land gambling industry in New Jersey has been very heavily pushing for the
full legalization of online casino gambling within the state. The federal
regulations on internet gambling specifically pertain to offshore and interstate
gambling so New Jersey, along with a handful of other US states have begun to
legislatively explore the possibility of a fully regulated and controlled
*intrastate* gambling industry. For New Jersey, this plan would allow the state
to flesh out some of the huge state budget concerns while also generating new
jobs within the state to combat the growing unemployment rate. For the past
several weeks it has really seemed as though New Jersey was truly on the cusp of
pushing through the bills proposing a state online casinos that operate out of
the existing Atlantic City companies.
And interestingly enough the Atlantic City casinos have remained mum on their
thoughts on the potential regulations, but now they are actually fighting the
state’s attempts for a fully regulated intrastate gambling industry. In fact, 11
New Jersey land gambling companies out of Atlantic City announced an objection
to the pending New Jersey regulations and have expressed concern that the
planned New Jersey online casinos are not actually legal according to the UIGEA.
Also, Atlantic City casinos also feel that a large online gambling industry
throughout the state will undermine the destination and resort gambling
experience within the state that has been built up over the past several
decades. With the current objections from the land gambling industry it’s
expected that the New Jersey regulations may take longer than initially
anticipated, if they are passed at all. |
