Regulatory Loop Holes
Thailand is by far not the only country to have dropped the ball in terms of
developing full and appropriate online casino gambling regulations. The Thai
government does have some land and internet gambling policies in place regarding
blocks to sports betting. Although the Thai officials do not have the regulatory
infrastructure to fully block the offshore online casinos and betting sites,
Thai authorities have announced the launch of several centers that are
specifically designed to combat an land and internet betting activity. The
likelihood of both land and internet bets are at an extreme high right now
because of the FIFA World Cup madness that has descended on the world of sports
and the Thai government is hoping that these new efforts and centers will limit
the amount of access.
One of the centers in question was already developed by the start of the World
Cup games in South Africa and the Thai government plans to monitor all potential
land and online casino betting activity around the clock from this center.
Thailand is one of those countries that is a bit late to the program – the
country has not updated its gambling laws in over 70 years. That means that
although the online casinos are technically illegal in Thailand right now, and
getting caught carries up to a year in prison, the laws concerning this industry
were develop more than four decades before the internet was even an inkling of a
medium.
Thai gamblers consistently use online casinos licensed out of nearby Asian
countries for their betting and chance gaming needs, so although the government
keen to stop internet gambling through these new centers, the likelihood of
these making much of a difference is low considering the ingrained nature of
internet betting in the country already. |
