Online Casinos Remain Longer in Cyprus
The Cyprian government recently decided to start some strong legal action in the
country in efforts to block online casino gambling from the island. Cyprus is
one of the larger licensing jurisdictions for the gambling industry and there
are no plans to change this status, but the government is concerned about
internet gambling abuse and problem gambling in the country. The concerns are so
prevalent that Cyprus’ government announced new bills were in development that
would force Internet Service Provider (ISP) level blocks and filters throughout
Cyprus as the primary means of blocking the online casinos. Although the new
Cyprian action was progressing rapidly for a while, the European Commission has
now stepped in and halted the new action until the Cyprian government complies
with some European Union mandated procedures, such as an impact study as well as
public consultation.
The public consultation aspect that has been missing from the planned online
casino gambling bans was most frustrating for many independent social
organizations that have been concerned that the government is acting outside of
the public’s wishes and yet failing to take that into consideration. The online
casino gambling industry is a huge part of the Cyprian culture right now and
internet gambling related companies make up a huge portion of the employment on
the island.
By the EU mandates that were just issued the online casino gambling bill has
been halted until the Cyprian government takes the needed steps to find out the
impact this bill might have on the island nation as well as public opinion. |
