Kiwi's On Poker Side
The New Zealand courts have now weighed in on the debate about poker – skill
versus chance and the Kiwi courts say that it’s a matter of skill. The severe
restrictions all over the world concerning online casinos have instigated a huge
push from land and internet poker players toward distinction. Poker players have
now made huge strides in the debate and yet there are still countries that rule
that poker is more chance than skill and therefore subject to the same
restrictions as the online casino industry. In addition to meaning that the
internet poker sites are then banned in countries with internet gambling blocks,
individual poker players have been arrested in various countries and use the
skill debate as a reason for holding private poker games.
Presiding Judge David J. Henry handled the most recent case with the poker issue
at the forefront and he fully cleared both land and internet poker from the
gambling regulations in the country. New Zealand is one of the countries with
limitations on online casino gambling practices and this has caused a lot of
strong debate in the marketplace regarding how poker plays a role in the Kiwi
gambling scene. This is essentially one of the most hotly debated topics in the
industry and something that poker fans feel passionately about asserting – that
poker in any form is far different from the land and online casinos.
The fact that New Zealand has gone this route with the policies bodes well for
other Western nations because it sets a level of precedence for expected
outcomes when poker versus the online casinos goes to the courts in Europe and
the US. |
