Protecting Online Casino Interests
The international media right now is rampant with news that all of the major
Canadian provinces are on the brink of legalizing the online casinos and
creating their own licensing systems that will allow Canadians to finally gamble
legally within the state. This action has been a long time coming because the
Canadian government has consistently refused to even acknowledge the situation
and create new regulations and policies that address the situation. Now though,
the Native tribes in Canada are looking for ways to actually protect their own
sovereignty by launching individual gambling commissions outside of those
created by the Canadian provinces. The action is happening fast toward Canadian
regulation and the native tribes in British Columbia in particular are worried
that the new online casino developments will override their right to also
regulate, license and operate internet gambling sites out of their reservations.
The British Columbian tribes are following the lead of the Mohawk Nation in
Quebec which has consistently maintained its sovereignty by keeping strong
controls in place and operating the Kahnawake Gaming Commission no matter what
the Canadian government has done to step in and take control. Additionally,
British Columbia is the only Canadian province that has not used collected
revenues from the online casinos as a way to give back and support the tribal
nations. The tribes are now considering ways to follow the lead of the Mohawk
tribe while also negotiating with the BC government to more clearly and
consistently earmark some of the gambling revenues to the tribes to help with
the poverty and low education levels.
There have been no set plans in the situation yet but the native tribes residing
in BC are hoping that the government will really step up to the plate and work
with them to better drag the tribal nation out of poverty. |
