Flaws in California's Bill
The Poker Players Alliance made a bold move this month with the announcement
that the PPA was not actually going to support the latest online casino poker
bill that was up for consideration in the State Senate. Bill 1485 angered a lot
of gambling groups both within the online casino gambling industry and outside
of the industry because it attempted to create a much different and more complex
system than what is already in place all over the world. The PPA feels that the
bill’s writers felt the need to reinvent the wheel when they were designing a
system of regulation for the online casinos and gambling groups offering the
sites. Europe and much of the rest of the developed world has a working model
for the internet gambling industry that has worked well and it’s surprising that
the bill’s writers went to such extremes to change the system.
That’s the crux of the problem for a lot of politicians as well as others within
the online casino gambling industry, the bill simply does not create a system
for California poker that falls within the federal rules and also takes into
consideration the gambling interests that already exist within California.
Including new online gaming sites launching out of Las Vegas just does not make
sense when California gamblers already have their own land casinos that are
branded and trusted. The bill overlooks the current Californian market and was
therefore far too flawed to pass through any further in the Senate.
As the bill goes through a re-write there are definitely important changes
taking place in other areas of the US that may eventually have an effect on the
legalization of a California online casino and poker gambling industry. New
Hampshire is on the brink of new internet gambling sites and several other sites
are passing the regulations now. |
