Online Casinos are Different
The internet poker and online casino gambling industry won a major fight this
week regarding the difference between the .com and .net sites that many of these
companies have launched. The two types of sites, both with the same domain name,
is a really popular tactic within the internet poker industry right now because
it allows these sites to brand themselves outside of the gambling arena and
become a recognized leader in information and fun-play gaming in markets that
may potentially open to regulated and legalized online casinos and poker in
later years. New Zealand is currently the first country that fully ruled on the
difference between the two sites and found that .net sites were valid and
legally able to continue operating outside of any restrictions related to the
gambling industry.
This is a huge step for the online casinos and poker sites that launched their
.net sites in New Zealand and Australia with the hopes of still accessing these
potential customers and building a brand foundation in the market. Although it
is very unclear about which way the regulatory push in Oz will go most online
casino companies agree that all long-term solutions for internet gambling
include eventual regulation and licensing. As for the current specifics, the
Kiwi judge ruled that the .net sites were not gambling related at all and that
these companies had clearly created a completely different personality for the
sites than their gambling counterparts.
Additionally, the court ruling supported the .net sites based on the behavior
and advertising activities – none of the online casinos and poker sites behind
the. .net sites have marketed their .net games as akin to poker, a fact that
goes a long way in the court’s opinion. |
