The Cocaine Argument
Who knew that one of the most clearly stated reasons that the US government
should legalize the online casino gambling industry would come from a book that
argues for the government control and legal distribution of cocaine in the US.
The topic is, naturally, incredibly controversial right now because it centers
on the War on Drugs in the US – an important policy that has been in place for
quite some time and yet has not proven incredibly effective. The book argues
that the drug war would be better served by government level controls rather
than a black market industry where the government has no idea the level of drug
use and no control over the substance itself. This is a debate point that has
been made for the online casinos as well.
Prohibition of alcohol did not work in the twenties in the US and it is not
appearing to work right now in a myriad of different issues that the US is using
this same tactic on. Like the alcohol of the past years, the online casinos are
currently in a prohibition phase even though the government has no real way to
enforce the prohibition. Drugs are the same situation – making something illegal
has never effectively stopped the activity when it’s something that can be
easily sold under the radar –like cocaine.
The case is strong for legalization of several of these industries because there
is so much evidence that the current laws are so incredibly ineffective. There
is a push right now for the government to recognize the failing legislation and
try a new tactic to see if a different form of control, that doesn’t involve
prohibition would work better for industries such as drugs and online casinos. |
