The Washington courts have now taken on a case that could really change the way
that internet poker is regulated in the United States. Washington State has some
of the most restrictive gambling laws in the United States and the state has
made both internet poker and the online casinos a felony offense for gamblers in
the state. Interestingly though, and one of the most hypocritical aspects of the
situation is the fact that Washington has a full and robust legal land gambling
industry and even some internet gambling on Fantasy Football and other areas.
For this reason the Poker Players Alliance has nearly wholly funded a case with
PPA State Director Lee Rousso heading up the action against the State of
Washington.
Rousso has lost several of the battles in the lower courts of Washington but the
PPA is in this case for the long haul and has continually repealed the rulings
and took the issue all the way to the high courts – the online caisno gambling
issue has made it to the Washington State Supreme Court and Rousso will face off
against Assistant Attorney General Jerry Ackerman to argue for a repeal of the
felony laws in the state. Ackerman, arguing the State’s case for having the
controversial laws in place, really does not have a strong case – his biggest
reason for keeping the online casino blocks in place is because the industry is
“unsafe,” a claim that is not supported by research.
On the other side of the debate however, there is a lot of evidence showing that
the online casinos can not only be regulated, but that it can be done
effectively. Additionally, the PPA is specifically interested in arguing a case
for the legalization of poker, a skill based game, if the State insists that the
chance internet gaming laws have to stay in place. |
