The Playing Field: Central America
The Central American online casino gambling market is one of those little talked
about but surprisingly diverse locations for international gambling groups. In
the past several years many major gambling sites have added Spanish-specific
gambling sites to their portfolio mostly for targeting Spain, but these sites
serve double duty as sites that have a lot of potential for growth in Central
and South America has well. South America has proven very tricky for internet
gambling groups because of regulatory ambiguities but Central American countries
are actually a bit more welcoming. In fact, although the Central American market
can be mildly lucrative for European online casinos the market is best known for
lax licensing laws.
Costa Rica is one of the key markets is Central America that has acted as a safe
haven for US facing online casino gambling groups. Most European licensing
jurisdictions and major gambling groups have withdrawn from the US market out of
fear of US Department of Justice action. Those sites that continue to focus on
US gamblers and offer online casinos and internet betting are most likely
operating out of Central America or the Caribbean. And though Costa Rica set a
pretty bad precedence for licensing in the region for several years the nation
decided to increase its standards and now has a lot more respect as a licensing
jurisdiction that at least has a modicum of oversight for the gambling sites
licensed out of the jurisdiction.
The growth factor in Central America, completely outside of the licensing side
of the business is actually modest. Central America is still on the developing
front in terms of personal internet penetration, which is a key factor in online
casino industry success. As the region becomes more prosperous, however, there
are new possibilities but Central America is far from a key focus for most
gambling groups. |
