Who's Getting Caught
The Thai government has announced that the authorities plan to closely monitor
all of the land and online casino betting activity that is taking place in the
country related to the currently running World Cup matches. The monitoring
process involves several official centers set up in Bangkok and other areas of
Thailand to really allow the officials to track down and stop some of the huge
internet betting rings that are prominently running throughout Thailand despite
the fact that the Thai government has no fully laid out and appropriate methods
in place for tracking the online casino bets. The Thai government seems to be
fighting a losing battle against the land and internet betting rings in the
country because large-scale betting is still so prominent.
Estimations show that nearly one billion dollars will be spent on betting for
the World Cup from Thailand alone. That figure is staggering considering the
fact that any form of land or internet betting technically carries a one year
prison sentence and fines in Thailand. The fact is though, although Thai
officials have begun to launch aggressive police campaigns against the land and
online casino betting sites the government is only catching a small number of
the bettors. Raids and arrests related to land and online casino betting on the
Euro 2008 games yielded a mere 1,000 arrests and very little actual cash. That
means that a huge portion of the betting is still occurring and is just outside
of the government’s current radar and scope.
The Thai officials are finding, like the US, Australia, China, and other
nations, that blocking the online casinos and internet betting is actually a
really hard task right now. Several of these other countries have begun to see
regulation and licensing of the market as the best form of control, but Thailand
is not yet at that place, the government continues to ban and ineffectively
block. |
