The New Jersey government is making some bold moves this month as the state Senate passes through a proposal that will legalize online casino gambling in the state. New Jersey is already the second largest spot in the state for US land gambling – and the largest on the East Coast, and now, with some of the first intrastate internet gambling laws in the country the government is hoping to position itself as the headquarters for a legalized US gambling market. Offshore online casinos are already vying for entry into the US market and as New Jersey prepares to offer legalized intrastate gambling (and legalized gambling throughout the US is only a few steps farther away) some of the conversations coming out of New Jersey indicate the state government is anticipating a very large US gambling industry in the near future.

In fact, one role that New Jersey may very well fill is as the center for online casino gambling headquarters in the US. This is a bit tangential from what the state plans to do with legalized and regulated intrastate gambling but shows a whole lot of foresight and long-term planning for a full US market. Joe Brennan, the Chairman of the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association has opined that New Jersey should position itself as the leading state for offshore online casinos to locate their domestic, American operations. If the US states are able to offer intrastate gambling the offshore companies would certainly need operations closer to their market; the same rationale is true for a fully legalized and federally regulated gambling market.

Suffice to say that New Jersey is really embracing the role that online casino gambling will likely play in the US’ future and is positioning the state to funnel a lot of the gambling activity from foreign companies into the US.
