Slow Government in the US
It’s actually pretty incredible to consider that the UIGEA, the Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, has been in effect for nearly four years at
this point. The UIGEA was passed through under a lot of controversy and there
was very little foresight and zero negotiations about the bill before it was
passed as a midnight addition to a must-pass bill in Congress. That oversight
has now manifested into a huge situation debated all around the world because it
so completely altered the US’ position on online casino gambling within the
country. The UIGEA is built (with severe flaws) to block the transactions
between US players and offshore online casinos. The high controversy over the
flawed legislation though has meant that thousands of US citizens have spent
nearly four years petitioning the government for change.
Not only does the UIGEA block offshore online casinos, but aspects of the bill
are also thought to apply to internet poker depending on how the act is
interpreted. The internet poker community in the US is incredibly active and has
spent the past four years spending millions on lobbying and education measures
for US politicians in the hope that more education about the online casino
gambling industry as well as the flaws inherent within the UIGEA would effect a
faster change. Over the past four years, however, there has been incredibly
little progress and the bills originally drafted have only recently seen the
floor of Congress for debate.
The online casino gambling issue is hotly debated among politicians right now
and because it is such a prominent issue it has largely stalled and counter
legislation is progressing through the government at a snails pace. |
