Site Shut Down
The Play Now online casino gambling site has officially shut down this week
because of a security compromise on the site that leaked personal information
for certain player accounts. The initial issue crashed the newly launched
gambling site on its launch day and a relaunch of the site this past week
indicated that the player accounts were still actually compromised. The Play Now
site was the British Lottery Corporation’s first attempt to operate a gambling
site that can compete with the offshore online casinos that are currently active
the in Canadian internet gambling market. The information on the exact extent
and nature of the security breach has still not been released by the BC Lottery
Corporation so there is simply speculation on a large portion of the breach.
What is known though is that the account breach is still active and the Lottery
Corporation has not yet found a way to overcome the security issues when the
site is active. When the online casino relaunched last week the officials had to
immediately shut the site down because gamblers other than the account holders
were still able to access player accounts and important player security data was
visible through player accounts. This debacle is actually quite uncommon at the
online casinos that launch on experienced platforms and from well respected
gaming sites.
Initial information indicates that the site hackers and security breach
compromised some player accounts and at least $8,000 was wagered illegally
through the accounts by non-account holders. Although the site is currently shut
down the BC Lottery Corporation has actually announced that it plans to once
again launch the online casino when the new security measures are implemented –
this situation acts as a cautionary tale to the other Canadian provincial
governments that are planning to launch state-run gambling sites. |
