Commercial Protectionism the Root
The United States government is walking a thin rope in the international
community with the continued development and enforcement of the controversial
UIGEA legislation. The UIGEA effectively blocks all offshore gambling
opportunities from entering the US market – this includes licensed online
casinos, betting sites, and poker rooms. The World Trade Organization has
previously ruled that the UIGEA was not fair under the international trade
agreements and yet the US government still refused to comply by drafting new and
inclusive regulations. There are many reasons given for the blocks on offshore
online casino gambling companies but the world knows that the UIGEA is a form of
commercial protectionism designed out of fear of the new mediums.
The land gambling industry in the US is incredibly well developed and there are
dozens of well defined sectors of the huge land gambling market. Land betting,
poker gambling and card games, slots parlors in some states and slots at the
racetracks in other states. The online casino industry could be viewed as just
one more piece to the equation if there was more acceptance within the land
industry and understanding within the government. Instead though, the US
politicians have indulged the powerful land gambling industry as well as the
religious right with accusations that the online casinos are far more dangerous
and should be banned from the market for the protection of the gamblers.
The real truth though is fear from the land gambling companies – fear that the
online casino gambling medium will make obsolete their businesses and steal all
of the market. This is a chief motivating reason for many blocking the US
internet gambling industry and commercial protectionism is not well regarded in
other well developed nations and there is a good chance that these gaming
companies could only be benefited financially by launching internet gambling
versions of their sites. |
