A Site by Any Other Name
Shakespeare may have been one of the first to wax poetic on the importance of a
name with his famous quote along the lines of “would a rose by any other name
smell as sweet?” That is precisely the question that the major online casinos
are asking themselves these days as new domain names surface in the marketplace
and go up for sale. The largest deal in the online casino gambling industry
to-date was the acquisition of the slots.com domain name by the Bodog Gambling
Group. Bodog is already a major name in the international gambling industry but
the company could not pass up the opportunity to buy the slots.com domain name,
even for the astronomical sum of $5.8 million.
These most recent very public domain name purchase within the online casino
gambling industry was within the Dutch market and because of the limited nature
of the domain name, onlinecasino.dk, the purchase price was a whole lot smaller
than it would have been if the site had a more international domain extension.
The onliencasino.dk domain name was sold for $580,000 to an undisclosed party.
The significance of this domain name purchase is actually far beyond the price
value of the domain, but rather the fact that the sale of the domain indicates
that the Dutch online casino gambling market is finally beginning to open to
foreign competition.
The rest of the online casino gambling industry has been eagerly looking forward
to the liberalization of the Dutch gambling market and this domain name is one
important step forward in allowing non-state-run gambling sites into the
competitive Dutch gambling market. |
