Online Casinos a Way of Life
America is nearing a new age in the online casino gambling industry as
Congressional Representative Barney Frank saw that House Financial Services
Committee pass his long awaited bill, HR 2267. The bill has been working toward
this moment for several years now and as the bill went for markup and debate in
the Committee Frank took that opportunity to speak in support of the bill and
give it context before the discussions and markup began. Although there so much
always said about why the UIGEA should be repealed, there is an equally
compelling case for the passage of online casino gambling measures. Frank
highlighted the fact that internet gambling restrictions go beyond the
acceptable government controls and infringe on civil liberties.
The government’s place is to only restrict the choice of American citizens when
it comes down to protecting citizens from harm – that has long been the only
true way that the government would choose to step in and take away personal
choices. In this case though, the personal choice was not fully considered when
the government took away personal choice to gamble at the online casinos and
passed the UIGEA through without any debate. Frank’s key argument for HR 2267
stems from the fact that it will bring back an essential freedom to American
citizens while also bringing a safer model to the legislative system.
It’s no surprise that Spencer Bachus was the main opponent to Frank’s main
points and that his argument is far from solid. Bachus noted that the choice of
online casino gambling should be put to the states to decide and not forced – an
issue he never previously fought for until now, as the HR 2267 gets increasingly
close to passage. |
