Can ISPs Block Gambling
The Israeli government has just announced a new plan to use ISP level blocks to
keep out the illegal online casinos that have continued to access Israeli
gamblers despite the fact that the pastime is illegal in Israel. Internet
censorship is one of those incredibly controversial activities in the global
community right now as the Western countries claim that no government has the
right to block out and control their market to such an extent – that censorship
of the online casinos is just one step toward more dangerous forms of censorship
down the line. For the ISPs though, the censorship is a technical issue that
they claim is tougher than merely adding sites to blocked list.
The Israeli government is not being very accommodating with the ISP and online
casino gambling situation and the police commander is only giving the ISP
companies a 48 hour deadline of compliance. The ISPs though feel that this is an
unreasonable expectation that they will have the systems and controls in place
to completely and thoroughly block these online casinos and questionable sites
in that time frame. On the larger scale there is also a concern that the ISP
level blocks will only prove a nuisance to any Israeli internet gamblers really
keen on accessing the sites.
Although the ISP level blocks can take a cursory shot at blocking a set list of
sites, in this case the online casinos, that is the extent of their power.
Internet technology in this day and age is very sophisticated and savvy Israeli
gamblers can use proxies and other re-route their IP addresses among so many
other technologies to continue accessing internet gambling. |
