Going Too Far
The online casino betting shops have begun to offer odds on just about
everything. Gone are the days when it was mainly the sports and races receiving
bets from the public, now gamblers are coupling their love for pop gossip with a
love for betting and gambling. UK online casinos in particular have begun to
seek out the top pop events taking place in the US and Europe and now offer
gamblers the chance to try out the odds and test their guesses. Lindsay Lohan
has been the keen focus of the public eye over the past several months because
of her very public antics and alcohol problems that have made headlines. Then
consider that Lohan is heating up the betting odds with gamblers all over the
world first speculating on whether she would earn jail time and now how long she
will actually serve of her term.
The question is though, is this all going a bit too far? The online casinos are
taking a keen interest in the lives of pop starts and celebrities and passing on
that interest to the bettors by offering odds. There have been bets placed on
the gender and names of babies celebrities, bets on whether celebs were on the
brink of a marriage or a divorce, and a ton of other life events that are
currently being heavily tracked by the online casino betting shops. The clearest
example of how this obsession has gone a bit far comes out of the 2008 US
Presidential elections when Paddy Power actually briefly allowed internet
bettors to bet on whether or not the US presidential candidate was going to be
assassinated.
The fact that this bet made it, even briefly onto the online casino betting
sites is absolutely horrific. It didn’t take Paddy Power long to realize that
this was taking the betting process a bit too far and not only take down the
bet, but also offer a public apology for the poor choice. There are lines that
the betting companies are navigating but so few have been fully crossed that it
is tough to sometimes know how much is just too much. |
